Search Engine? No, it's Wolfram|Alpha

Wolfram-1 Launched on May 18, 2009, Wolfram|Alpha is not your average search engine.  In fact, it is not a search engine at all.  Instead, it is labeled as a "computational knowledge engine: it generates output by doing computations from its own internal knowledge base, instead of searching the web and returning links."  Examples of how to use the service include entering dates, town names, stocks, calculations and mathematical formulas.  Want to find out more?  Try watching the Introductory video or simply go to the website and give it a try.

More information about the technology behind the knowledge engine is listed below.  You can also check out the FAQS page for more information about Wolfram|Alpha.

What is the core technology of Wolfram|Alpha?
There are many parts to it, each with significant innovations. Four key general areas are the data curation pipeline, the algorithmic computation system, the linguistic processing system, and the automated presentation system.

How big is the Wolfram|Alpha source?
It's currently about 5 million lines of symbolic Mathematica code, together with many terabytes of data.

How easy is it to scale Wolfram|Alpha?
Wolfram|Alpha uses a modular server architecture, similar to many modern supercomputers. Scaling to accomodate more requests simply requires having more modules.

RefWorks Trial

The Kettering University Library has a trial subscription to RefWorks with RefShare through June 13th.  RefWorks is a web-based citation management tool that enables users to store, manage, and output bibliographic references from various sources, including online article databases.

RefWorks can help you effectively organize and manage citations while conducting research, incorporate references into word processing documents, and create independent bibliographies in a variety of styles.  Subscribers can store their reference databases online, use and update them from anywhere, and share data with other subscribers.

There is a link to the RefWorks trial on the Library’s homepage (http://www.kettering.edu/library) with on-campus IP recognition.  Create an account and give it a try.  A tutorial is available at http://www.refworks.com/tutorial, and a Help menu is available once a user is logged in.

A help sheet for exporting records from the ASME database which is hosted on the Scitation platform can be found here: http://guides.library.unlv.edu/content.php?pid=3847&sid=25582.  A help sheet for exporting records from Science Citation Index is here: http://www.stlawu.edu/library/node/1131.  Exporting records from OCLC FirstSearch seems to work best in Internet Explorer.  Exporting records from other Kettering databases is relatively straightforward.

We would appreciate your thoughts on RefWorks.  Please send feedback or questions to library@kettering.edu, or call the Reference Desk at 762-9598.
