Library offers Food, Fun and a chance to let your inner Rock Star shine!

Are new classes stressing you out?  Why not take a break and come down to the library for free food, games and fun.  Third Week Wednesday July 30th marks Game Night at the library from 5:30pm-9:00pm.  Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Wii, Rock Band, Play Station and X-Box 360 are just the beginning! Senator Barack Obama Visits Kettering University!

Obama Monday (6/16/2008) was a very exciting day at Kettering University!  Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive democratic nominee, spoke to a crowd of over 1,400 people at the Connie & Jim John Recreation Center.  It was a historic day for the university and also for the city of Flint as Obama shared his vision for better America.  On hand at Kettering University to offer Senator Obama support was Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Senator Carl Levin, Congressmen Dale Kildee and John Dingell and Flint's Mayor Don Williamson.

Burning the Midnight Oil at the Library

Exam_3 It's that time again!  The Library will be extending it's hours for Finals Week.   If you need a comfortable place for group study or projects, the Library's the place to be. Black and white printing is free, and color laser printing is $.20/sheet.  Photocopies are $.10/sheet, and black and white transparencies are $.50/transparency.

Are you looking for a place that offers entertainment and relaxation along with your favorite food and snacks? On Ninth Week Wednesday, June 4, from 5:30-9:00pm the library will be a gaming arcade offering your favorite video, board and card games. Enjoy X-Box 360, Dance, Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Wii, Rock Band and Play Station.  Or bring your favorite game and tell a friend. Pizza, pop, chips, and pretzels are FREE (while they last). To search the library holdings for more of your favorite movie titles follow these steps:

 

1)  If you’re on the library’s blog (http://ketteringlibrary.typepad.com/) there’s a link on the right side called DVD List under the Library Holdings section.  You’ll then be able to sort the list by author, title, or publication date. 

2) If you’re in the library’s catalog, there’s a tab on the top labeled “Media Collections” where you can see both our VHS and our DVD collection, and again you’ll be able to sort the list by author, title, or publication date. 

3) From the catalog do a regular Keyword search and use the limit “Coll: KU DVD Collection” to look for specific movies.

Phoenix's Landing on Mars

230783main_image_1092_346260The Phoenix spacecraft landed successfully on the surface of Mars late Sunday night and is already beginning to send pictures back to earth.  The craft traveled over 400 million miles to reach the martian surface for its exploration mission.  Check out the latest images on NASA's website!

The Phoenix project  has been an international effort and the United States has partnered with many agencies worldwide such as: the Canadian Space Agency; the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland; the universities of Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark;  Max Planck Institute, Germany; the European Space Agency; and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Memorial Day

Memorialdaypoppy Memorial Day is a federal holiday that is the unofficial start of summer for most Americans.  A brief history of the day can be found here.  You can join in a national moment of remembrance at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 26.  The Library will be closed Saturday, May 24 - Monday, May 26.  On Tuesday, May 27, library hours will be 7:45 a.m. -- 8:00 p.m.  Have a safe and happy holiday!

Sailing Robot to Cross Atlantic

Beagle_b_sailing_robot In Sep/Oct 2008, seven robotic sail boats will compete in a race across the Atlantic Ocean.  The race will start in Portugal and winning boat will be the first one to reach between the northern tip of St. Lucia and the southern tip of Martinique in the Caribbean.  The race's goal, by way of friendly competition, is the advancement of autonomous sailing vessels.

"The Last Lecture"/Randy Pausch with Jeffrey Zaslow

" The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch, Professor, Carnegie Mellon University, with Jeffrey Zaslow, has hit the No. 1 spot on the New York Times' Best Seller List in just under a month's time.  In the fall of 2006, The_last_lecture_2_2Randy Pausch was a computer science professor at  Carnegie Mellon University when the course of his life was forever changed with the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer at age 47.  A year after his diagnosis, Pausch gave his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon.  The goodbye lecture was not only for the 400 people in the auditorium but also as a legacy to his 3 young children.  What would you say if you knew it was your last time teach, give life advice, or leave a legacy?  Stop by the library today and get inspired by reading "The Last Lecture".  Also, check out co-author Jeffrey Zaslow's piece in the Wall Street Journal titled "A Final Farewell".

Success Story / Book Sale & Silent Auction

P1000025_2 We would like to thank everyone that supported this years' FOLA Book Sale & Silent Auction! It was success, thanks to all the hard work of the many volunteers.  Kettering employee's and the area business community donated 214 auction items this year.  P1000032_3 The bidding towards the end of the auction was quite intense and but came to stop once the closing bell sounded at 1:30PM.  Once again, we thank everyone for supporting the Kettering University Library & Scharchburg Archives.
